Trully Verify Africa, established in 2023, is a pioneering social enterprise dedicated to the critical mission of combating the spread of misinformation and fake news, particularly among the youth.
Founded by the visionary Ruhamah Ifere, following a tenure as an election observer with the Center for Democracy and Development, Trully Verify Africa addresses the alarming disengagement of young people from civic processes—a consequence of the pervasive influence of false information.
Our journey began with a recognition: the future of democracy hinges on the informed participation of its youth. This led to our first accolade, a second-place finish at the Code for Africa Hackathon against misinformation in 2023.
Our commitment to fostering digital democracy propelled us to the Lagos Digital Democracy Fair, in collaboration with YIAGA Africa, UKinNigeria, and Civic Hive, where we showcased our innovative solutions. Furthering our reach, we presented at the Regional Conference on Countering Information Manipulation in West Africa, organized by the National Democratic Institute and the Center for Democracy and Development.
At the heart of our initiative is the Media Information Literacy (MIL) project, aptly named “Co-Creating Antibodies to Fake News.” This flagship program has empowered over 100 youths, equipping them with the critical skills to discern and combat misinformation. Our efforts are bolstered by the support of local and international partners, including Code for Africa, the International Press Center, Democracy Lab, and American Corner Lagos, among others.
Trully Verify Africa stands as a beacon of hope and action, inspiring a generation to rise above the noise of falsehoods and participate actively in shaping their democratic landscape.
